The European Parliament aims to boost domestically sourced proteins

The European Parliament has approved a new protein strategy to increase the production and consumption of plant-based proteins in Europe. The plan focuses on initiatives such as biogas, collaborations with farmers, and labels that depict the ecological footprint of products.

Proteins are an essential part of our diet. Currently, about forty percent of our protein intake comes from plant-based sources such as legumes and grains. Often, these are imported from abroad: 29 percent of plant-based proteins are imported from outside Europe. To reduce dependency on other countries, member states are urging to produce more plant-based proteins domestically. This new protein strategy has not only been approved but also developed by the European Parliament.
